Platform & Chunky Heels

Platform soles, lucite panels and stacked chunky heels. The platform under the toe cuts the effective pitch of the foot, so a four-inch heel walks shorter than it measures.

What the platform is doing

A platform is a slab under the toe, and it changes the arithmetic of a heel rather than the height of it. Four inches of heel over an inch of platform tilts the foot the way three inches would, while still standing the wearer four inches taller. This is why a number that looks unwearable on paper is often the easier shoe of two.

The cost is at the front. A platform is rigid, so the sole does not bend where the foot wants to bend, and the stride shortens to suit it. Stairs are the place you notice: the toe edge is further forward and lower than it feels. The heel guide sets platforms against blocks, wedges and stilettos.
